Shamshahrin graduated with a Diploma in Photography in 1994 with a major in Photojournalism and minor in Fine Arts. He interned with the New Straits Times in 1993. Shortly after graduating from UiTM, Shah Alam, he joined The Star as a staff photographer until 1999.
He joined the French newswire agency Agence France-Presse as a second photographer in the Kuala Lumpur bureau in early 1999. Having served in the internationally recognized agency, his works have been published in local and foreign newspapers and most of the well-known magazines such as Life magazine’s website (Photo of the Day), IHT, Time, Asiaweek, Far Eastern Economic Review, The Star-Ledger (NY) and others.
He decided to switch from being a news photographer to travel, when he was offered to lead a web-based photography team for assignments throughout the country in 2000. He gained experience and knowledge in web-business and digitally–related industries, where he served as Senior Photographer with the company until 2002.
Apart from his busy schedule, he still finds time to be a judge for photography competitions, share his knowledge and experience by giving talks, conducting workshops and teaching Photojournalism in universities.
Shamshahrin is a member of the Board of Assessors for Photography module for the Ministry of Human Resource and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) under the Ministry of Education. He is also a Panel member for Photography Accreditation for Malaysian Creative Content Industry Guild (CCIG).
Currently, he is a photographer for the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) in Kuala Lumpur from 2004 till 2014 and currently with METADATA as Principal Trainer. He was picked to assist Dr Shahidul Alam; a member of Board of Advisor for National Geographic & MAGNUM Agency for his Photojournalism Masterclass in Kuala Lumpur in May 2016.
